Tiebreaker FAQs

Q: Do away goals count in head-to-head tiebreakers?

No. The tournament uses a simple head-to-head comparison without any away goals rule. If Team A beats Team B 2-1 at home and loses 1-0 away, Team A wins the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Q: What if teams split their head-to-head matches?

If Team A beats Team B 2-0, but Team B beats Team A 1-0 in another match, we look at the overall head-to-head record: A has +1 goal difference, so A wins the tiebreaker.

Q: Has a team ever advanced to knockout stages on fair play?

Yes! In previous tournaments, teams have been separated by disciplinary records when all other statistics were identical. Every card matters in tight groups.

Q: What happens after fair play?

A drawing of lots is the final tiebreaker. It is extremely rare, but if teams are still inseparable after the sporting criteria and fair play, FIFA can decide placement by lot.
